Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, CA United States of America

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, in California’s southern Sierra Nevada, are twin treasures known for their giant sequoia trees and dramatic mountain scenery. Visitors can stand beneath General Sherman, the largest tree on Earth by volume, and walk through groves where trunks as wide as small houses stretch high into the sky. The parks’ elevation ranges from oak-covered foothills to alpine peaks over 14,000 feet, creating a remarkable variety of landscapes in a relatively compact area. Most visitors start in Sequoia National Park, exploring the Giant Forest, home to General Sherman and accessible trails like Congress Trail and Big Trees Trail. A short drive away, the steep switchbacks up to Moro Rock offer sweeping views of the Great Western Divide, while nearby Tunnel Log provides a classic photo spot. For a quieter experience, Crescent Meadow and Hazelwood Nature Trail offer peaceful walks among wildflowers and towering trees, especially in late spring and early summer. Often less crowded, Kings Canyon feels more rugged and wild. The scenic Kings Canyon Byway drops into one of North America’s deepest canyons, following the South Fork of the Kings River past granite cliffs, waterfalls, and lush meadows. Popular stops include Grizzly Falls, Zumwalt Meadow, and the Grant Grove area, where General Grant—the “Nation’s Christmas Tree”—stands as another iconic giant sequoia. This side of the park is ideal for longer hikes, river viewpoints, and access to backcountry trailheads. The best time to visit is generally late May through October, when most roads and high-country trails are open and snow has receded from higher elevations. Summer brings warm days and cool nights, while spring and fall offer fewer crowds and vivid seasonal color. In winter, the parks become a snowy wonderland, with limited access but opportunities for snowshoeing and quiet walks among snow-draped sequoias. Whenever you visit, be ready for quick weather changes, respect wildlife, and give yourself time—these parks reward unhurried exploration.
